Maruti Suzuki Gypsy : There is news that the Indian Army can also retire the Gypsy soon. Here we are going to tell you about 5 such powerful SUVs sold in India, which can replace the Gypsy in the army.
The Maruti Suzuki Gypsy has had a long journey in India. It was first launched in the 1980s. Gypsies were very much liked among people who had to go to the mountains or rough places. It was a real and very powerful car. The company stopped its production in 2019 for the general public. Even after this, Maruti continued to produce SUVs for the Army and several other government departments and ministries.
Now there is news that the Indian Army can also retire the Gypsy soon. Here we are going to tell you about 5 such powerful SUVs sold in India, which can replace the Gypsy in the army.
Mahindra Thar
What could be better than this SUV to replace the Gypsy? Mahindra Thar is a comfortable and powerful SUV. Thar comes with 150PS 2-litre petrol engine or 130PS 2.2-litre diesel engine. It gets the same 4-wheel drive (4WD) system as the Gypsy. Apart from this, it also gets 650 mm of water landing capability and an electronic traction control system, which detects wheel slip to aid traction on slippery surfaces. The Thar also comes in a soft-top variant, which can be modified for multiple military uses. Due to these characteristics, it is a strong contender for the Indian Army.

Though, it was relaunched in 2021 with many changes, the new model gets the same overall proportions, similar sized engine and its own ladder frame chassis. Its coil spring suspension is quite comfortable for the passengers and it gets many new safety features including dual front airbags, rear parking sensors, cornering lamps and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). It comes with a water depth of 700 mm and 35 percent gradeability for climbing steep slopes. The Gurkha is one of the most powerful off-roaders SUV you can buy in India.

The Compass Trailhawk safety kit includes a 360-degree camera, six airbags, underbody protection plates, stability control and electronic roll mitigation. It gets a 170PS 2-litre diesel engine, which is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission and a low-range gearbox with 20:1 crawl ratio. Maruti Jimny
We have been waiting for the arrival of the Jimny for a long time and its four-door variant may finally arrive in India by 2023. This is the fourth generation model of the Gypsy, in which many similarities will be seen like the Gypsy. It will be launched with ladder frame underpinnings and retro styling. It is expected to get an affordable yet powerful mild-hybrid 1.5-litre petrol powertrain and is also safer than the old Gypsy. The Jimny gets a rugged ladder frame chassis, solid front and rear axles and three-link front and rear suspension. Equipped with the Suzuki AllGrip Pro 4WD system and traction and hill descent control system, the tough yet modern Jimny is a great army SUV.

Mahindra Bolero Neo
The 4×4 Mahindra Bolero has replaced the Gypsy in the police fleet but would be better suited for the Indian Army with its more modern name. The Bolero Neo in stock form doesn’t even offer 4WD, but it clearly aspires to be an off-roader with its mechanically locking rear differential and Multi Terrain Technology (MTT). It also gets the same 1.5-litre diesel engine that powers the Bolero with a higher output of 100PS/260Nm. If Mahindra can offer it a 4WD system, then the Bolero Neo could be a good alternative to the Maruti Gypsy of the Indian Army.
