EU wants to work with India
He said that ‘this is valid not only in Europe but also in the Indo-Pacific, where we see increasing tension. With our Indo-Pacific strategy, we have clearly indicated that the EU has a strong stake in the security and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific. We want to work with our friends and partners, especially with India.’ Von der Leyen said, ‘I tell all my interlocutors that we need to stop this aggression now. We must respect the United Nations Charter, the territorial integrity and sovereignty of nations.
‘Challenge to global peace’
“We are also working very closely with India in this regard and we appreciate Prime Minister Modi‘s repeated calls for immediate cessation of hostilities as well as humanitarian assistance from India to Ukraine,” he said. He said that the attack without any reason is a challenge to the principles underpinning global peace and security. Let us tell you that India has condemned the killings of civilians in Bucha and has repeatedly called for an end to the conflict in Ukraine and return to the path of dialogue. PM Modi has suggested that there should be direct talks between the Presidents of Russia and Ukraine.
‘Sanctions on Russia try to stop bloodshed’
Von der Leyen said sanctions imposed on Russia by more than 40 countries are intended to stifle Putin’s ability to continue the bloodshed in Ukraine. The sanctions are directed against the Kremlin’s war machinery. We invite other countries to join this effort, because Russia’s aggression is a threat not only to individual countries, but to the entire world.
